Shookrah

Shookrah

Shookrah are a 6-piece outfit from Cork, serving fresh helpings of synth-grooves, interruptive hooks, and dystopian romance-themed songs. Their sound sits somewhere between neo-soul and the emerging schools of R&B/soul that define themselves as "future soul." Influences include the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Solange, Thundercat, Anderson .Paak and The Internet. Advancing from accolade to accolade (awarded Best Irish Band of the Year in 2017 and 50 People to Watch in 2018 by The Irish Times), Shookrah are positioning themselves as important pioneers in the blossoming urban music scene in Ireland, with their debut album set for release in early 2019.

The ensemble formed in 2014 and began to establish their reputation as a fat-banger-churning R&B group with the release of their debut single W.O.M.A.N. The song became a local anthem of womanity and challenging preconceptions around female identity. The pack have released two EPs since then: Implicit Content and 2017’s Clichés. The most recent included acclaimed singles Gerascophobia and Our Own Way, which led to a string of enviable slots supporting the likes of Theo Katzman, Billy Ocean, and Rusangano Family, as well as charming festival crowds at Body & Soul, Electric Picnic and Townlands Festival to Dublin Fringe Festival and Other Voices Music Trail.

Holding true to the predicted successes for 2018, Shookrah are keeping their feet on the pedal with the first single from the upcoming album, Don’t Wanna Doubt You (Respectfully Woo Me), an upbeat, sultry instruction on the key ingredients to seduction as told by Senita — namely, respect and patience. With producer Brendan Fennessy (of O Emperor) and a slick new music video, Shookrah are making bold moves to put out a body of work that stands the test of time in its sophistication and pizazz.

Winner: Irish Band of the Year (2017)

— The Irish Times

"Shookrah comfortably slide into their jazzy funk style like it’s a vintage suede jacket. You can hear the influence of the groovy cats who blazed 1970s American funk and 1990s neo-soul, as well as new-age Los Angeles beat scene bohemians like Flying Lotus and Thundercat."

— The Irish Times

"Impossible to confine to a genre, ‘Gerascophobia’ sounds like wicked, dirty pop music tousled with a bit of soul and funk that melds into a velvety psychedelic haze. However you want to describe it, the Cork City-based band knows how to hypnotize with their bombastic sound."

— Afropunk.com

Cork newcomers have a refreshing, unusual sound... they have found soul delirium. The six-piece have a sound that is all their own, fusing soul influences into a psychedelic template.”

— Clash Magazine

"Cork six-piece Shookrah have always brilliantly blurred the lines between R&B and throwback soul with a decidedly more forward-thinking approach."
The Thin Air

“Gerascophobia… As young and fresh as a soul song in 2017 can be”

— Nialler9, Irish Times Song of the Week

"Shookrah have stormed the scene with a fresh sound that isn't what you'd expect from an Irish group"

— Hot Press Magazine

Vernon Jane

Vernon Jane

Vernon Jane are a Jazz Punk band from Dublin, who have grown from strength to strength since their first EP release ‘The Inner Workings Of A Damaged Nobody’ in 2016. The release led to a sold-out show in The Opium Rooms, and multiple festival appearances including Electric Picnic, Body & Soul, Liverpool Sound City, and a headline slot at Knockanstockan in 2016.

2017 brought Vernon Jane's biggest success thus far in their single ‘Fuck Me’. The animated video for ‘Fuck Me’ went viral across multiple websites including Reddit and NewGrounds which resulted in the views of the video increasing from 5,000 to 50,000 views overnight on YouTube. This publicity led to contact from a record label in China ‘Pocket Records’ and the band have recently signed a deal which will see their music distributed across multiple platforms in the growing Chinese market.

However, it is Vernon Jane's live show which has people coming back for more. The intensity, creativity and hard work Vernon Jane put in behind the scenes is the reason why they sold out Whelan's Main Room with the release of their single ‘Fuck Me’ in early 2017. After a summer of song writing in New York, and finishing the year with over 100,000 plays on Spotify, Vernon Jane have recently sold out The Sugar Club for their last release April 2018.

Opium Rooms. Whelan’s. Sugar Club. What’s next for this little band from Dublin?

JyellowL & DJ Geadel

Fresh from being picked as one of 2018's most promising new acts by The Thin Air and State.ie, as well as an astonishing show at Whelan's Ones To Watch in Dublin, Irish rapper JyellowL has released two new videos from his debut Bulletproof EP. While the tracks may be of different styles (showcasing the softer and harder side of his music), the videos act as companion pieces - telling the story of confronting your demons, conquering them before eventually becoming them.

With last year's appearance on the RTE cypher series and 'Nuh Fi Hurt Me' recently featuring alongside the likes of Brockhampton, Warm Brew and Tyler The Creator on Spotify's Alternative Hip-Hop playlist, JyellowL is fast becoming one of the most exciting, intelligent artists on the Irish scene.

Eve Belle

Eve Belle

Eve Belle is a young singer, songwriter and chronicler of sorrows from deepest Donegal. Her songs and stories are imbued with an uncommon world-weariness seldom found in writers of such tender years.

In Eve Belle’s songs, someone is always leaving; or is about to be left. Her gaze is unblinking, she says: “I try to create emotional portraits of my own experiences through my lyrics. I think the best songs come from the most earnest emotions, so I try to put minimal filters between what I feel and what I say in the song.”

In 2016, One of Eve Belle’s early songs, the aptly-titled, achingly beautiful ‘Too Young To Feel This Old’ came to the attention of Irish independent label Rubyworks. Around the same time, her evocative cover of Coldplay’s ‘Violet Hill’ found favour with Chris Martin & Co., and was widely shared online.

On signing to Rubyworks, Eve worked with London-based producer Fred Cox, best known for his work with Billie Marten and Lion Babe, and Simon Aldred of Cherry Ghost and Birdy fame. The first fruits of their studio labours is her new single ‘Boy From The Blue’.

Eve says of the song: “‘Boy From The Blue’ was inspired by that sense of surreal giddiness that comes with being infatuated with someone new, when the lines between physical things and emotions become a bit blurred and there are symbols everywhere, that we like to read meanings into.”

Drawing on influences as diverse as Julien Baker, Cigarettes After Sex and Conor Oberst, Eve Belle has recently played live in Ireland with Frightened Rabbit and Rodrigo y Gabriela and enjoyed festival appearances at Electric Picnic, Indiependence and Sea Sessions.

Eve Belle has opened for Beth Orton her Irish tour, and was the special guest at Wyvern Lingo’s sold-out album launch show in Dublin.‘Boy From The Blue’ is available now on all good download and streaming services.

The Ocelots

Situated in Wexford, 20-year-old twins Brandon and Ashley together are The Ocelots. They have crafted their songwriting and musical experience together to produce a forceful blend of rich harmonies and bare, raw acoustic folk. Their music perfectly embodies the breezy effortlessness of early Bob Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel.

Deeply embedded in the Irish music scene, The Ocelots have showcased their music in Irish festivals like Body & Soul, Spirit of Folk, Hard Working Class Heroes, and Electric Picnic, whilst also playing Ireland’s top venues such as Whelan's, Sweeney's, The Ruby Sessions, and Cyprus Avenue. The Ocelots maintain their largely independent music trail by frequenting different cities all across Europe. The two brothers platform their music through various live video channels where they perform in random pop up locations around cities and countrysides. They feature on popular youtube channels such as Sofar London, Berlin Sessions, Joe Sessions and rising filmmaker Christian Tierney’s channel.

The brothers released their first EP, Till We Get There in October, gaining instant attention from The Irish Times, which voted them "Top Artists of the Week," and Spotify, which included them in their “Stress Buster” playlist, alongside Cigarettes after Sex and Autonomy.

Alien She is Katie O’Neill (solo experimental artist) on vocals and guitar, Aoife McDonagh (poet and writer) on bass and vocals, and Darragh McCabe (Jon Dots) on drums. Playing songs that have been described as expressive, shoegaze, experimental, and agitated punk — Alien She prides themselves on their unique genre-defying sound. The Thin Air has described the trio as “a mixture of raw and relentless energy which manifests itself in a number of different manners… their constant progression and experimentation prevent the group from reproducing same-sounding tracks, keeping their sound fresh.”

The band has just released their searing debut album, Feeler, on Art For Blind Records. The Last Mixed Tape gave the album a 9/10 and Remy called the release “like an out of control rocket.” In 2017, they supported Priests and Pussy Riot and are now focusing on recording their second album.

Katie Laffan

Recently named by the Irish Times as one of their people to watch in 2018, Katie Laffan has never been an artist to stand still. From a debut EP of lo-fi funk to the subtly affecting Trophy and last year’s alternative disco anthem Tastemaker, the Dubliner delights in taking influence from a wealth of genres — producing most of her own music in a home studio. Having spent much of 2017 playing with her band at the likes of Electric Picnic (where she was deemed the “new act of the festival” by the Irish Times), the IMRO Other Room at Other Voices, Body&Soul, and the St. Patrick’s Festival Young Blood event at the National Concert Hall, Katie Laffan has returned to the solo approach for her new Spacer EP.

"It's so addictive, we sense stardom is imminent..."

—Record of the Day

A further taste of what’s to come can be found in the form of new single Aversion, a meeting of spacey production and exquisite pop melodies. As with all her lyrics, the song offers a very personal insight into the topics that inspire Laffan — in this case, the struggle for self-expression and the fear of being yourself in light of peer pressure. The accompanying video, above, directed by Laura Sheeran, captures the themes perfectly — reveling in the joy of leaving your cares and doubts behind and featuring a cameo from Irish scientist and candidate astronaut Dr. Norah Patten. The clip was premiered as part of Norah’s talk at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, at which she also played in front of President Michael D. Higgins.

"Fabulously lissom beatnik disco pop..."

— The Times

"You can almost hear the disco ball spinning overhead..."

Junior Brother

Junior Brother is an experimental folk singer/ songwriter from Co. Kerry, Ireland, playing slightly unhinged, sometimes heady tunes.
His music has been described as unique, experimental and distinctly Irish, being heavily influenced by his upbringing in rural Ireland.
Currently based in Dublin, Junior Brother's played the annual Whelan's Ones to Watch festival the last two years, and has played support for acts such as the Hot House Flowers, R.S.A.G. and Mark Geary.
"Fuck Off I Love You" is the second EP Junior Brother has released, after his previous "Sleeping at the Bottom of the Sea" received airplay on shows such as Lyric FM's Blue of the Night, and among several acoustic instruments all played by himself, features his live set-up of acoustic guitar and tambourine. The EP's title represents the theme at the heart of the music; music tied to the earth, attempting to reach up beyond the clouds - songs filled with grounded humour, and songs filled with ambition to romanticize and reach beyond.

One Horse Pony

As part of the MUDDY WATERS Single Launch Tour ONE HORSE PONY are delighted to announce they will be joining the killer line-up of K-fest! One Horse Pony have already played with and received plaudits from legends like Blind Boys of Alabama (“we thought we were at church!”) and in a short space of time have racked up festival appearances at Electric Picnic, Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Indiependence, Kilkenny Roots Festival and more.

The original meaning of Corcaigh, the band’s hometown, is a marshy place and maybe there is a deeper connection here between the sounds of America’s Mississippi Delta and Leeside. This is not music with straight sides and sharp corners; it is music born of rough edges, crooked lines, with fire in its belly and alt-roots at its heart.

Their debut single ‘Muddy Waters’ could be taken as a homage to the great man himself, a tribute to where they are from or simply a rhythmic-roots tour de force whose screeching harmonica and foot-stomping drive sets the stall out perfectly for a band intent on capturing their much-heralded live performances. ‘Muddy Waters’ is taken from an EP, Hot One (produced by Gavin Glass) due out later this year. In the meantime, enjoy the sounds of Ireland’s freshest, yet simultaneously dirtiest, no-good, shack-in-the-swamps trio that go by the name of One Horse Pony.

Ceschi

Ceschi Ramos is a rapper and singer from New Haven, Connecticut who has been hopping genres and spilling guts for the better part of two decades. He has been seen outside venues at 3am in Germany playing an acoustic guitar and singing to people that didn’t want the show to end. He has written poems to fans from behind bars whilst locked up on bogus marijuana charges. He has suffered a spiral fracture of the humerus whilst arm wrestling a marine in Hawaii. He has recorded with and toured alongside some of independent rap music’s most influential figures, including Sage Francis, Busdriver, and Astronautalis. He has been in bands described as hardcore, crunk rap, lo-fi synth pop, Latin progressive, and psych-jazz-rap. He has crafted abstracted and personal narratives mining the depths of depression and heights of hope. He has slept on countless floors when hotels weren’t in the touring budget and lost girlfriends and jobs all for the love of creating and performing.

Ceschi was born with four fingers on his right hand, which served as partial inspiration for the name of his DIY record label, Fake Four, Inc. Those who have worked with him describe Ceschi as one of the most artist-friendly labelheads out there, a rare breed who values art over profit almost to a fault. Since 2008, he has curated a roster of wildly original and critically praised talent and put out albums from the likes of Open Mike Eagle, Buck 65, Sister Crayon and Dark Time Sunshine in addition to his solo records Band Broke Up and Broken Bone Ballads.

FOXTALES

The full origins of this band are somewhat lost to the annals of time. This is most likely due to memory loss from partying in first year of college but some research has been done via looking through embarrassing Facebook pictures and going through old text messages translated by guess work. It is fact that two of the band members met in Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa , cork city while dossing from a lecture on Law. There was also a third member ,who was part of the early stages of “foxtales” ... which was known as “Boots&cats”,who was a poet and a lunatic . Badly named and badly organised the band went from pub to pub looking for open mic nights to earn free pints of beer which didn't generally help with performances but made for good laughs and general cheer. The band had some success on the streets of cork city after the hour of 12 am busking to rambling crowds of students who may have just been throwing coins at the trio to damage instruments and facial features... the facts are not clear.
After college the trio disbanded and didn't see each other for a few months which was for the best as tensions had run high due to the constant changing of arrangements during performances. Gemma went back to karaoke, kyle got a gig as a trad backing guitarist and Cathal resided in dingle town as a minstrel and sometime troubadour. more to come ...

JAMES & THE NORTH SHORE - MEAGAN MAY

James & The North Shore released an 8 song debut via Factotum CO titled “Lover? I Barely Know Her”. Recorded live from the floor, the album displays the band at their most honest and raw. James Bryan’s stark lyrics and delivery are reminiscent of a Leonard Cohen or Jason Molina. The North Shore provide the backbone that guides the ship. Sometimes they veer into wildness, other times into calm. Cohesively the group form a folk sound with sub-Celtic influences and a working class ethos that recalls Billy Bragg.
The group toured across Canada in the fall of 2017 and are touring Europe in May/June 2018
