STEO WALL

STEO WALL

Sol y Sombra - 11.45pm

Not everybody can boast such collaborators as Luka Bloom, Damien Dempsey and Davey Spillane on their debut album but when you meet Steo Wall for the first time you quickly understand why such great musicians wanted to get involved with ‘Where I’m From’ – Steo’s debut album. A sound bloke, quick to laugh with a rich Dublin accent and the wit to go with it; Steo's debut album boasts eleven heartfelt biographical tracks that radio dj’s will lap up. Damien Dempsey calls Steo’s work ‘Irish soul music' and was quick to ask Steo to be his warm up act on a recent nationwide tour. Damien accompanies Steo on the first track to be released from the album ‘What’s wrong with the world Ma’.

Mixing traditional Irish folk with some contemporary Irish rap, Steo brings the listener on a journey from the badlands of Dublin working class housing estates to the beauty of Ireland’s west coast. Steo paints a picture of rebellious loved friends and adored family members, the album being an homage to those gone before him. It’s these family members which give us an understanding of the depth of Steos musical influences. When Steo told Davey Spillane of the family connection to the world renound gypsy uillean pipers, Johnny and felix Doran, Davey offered to put his sound onto one of the tracks. ‘Sarah Doran’ an ode to Steo's traveller grandmother is the third track on the album and Davey Spillanes whistle is a beautifully fitting tribute.

Growing up in Dublin gave Steo a grounding in rap, ‘Though I was more Toothpick then Tupac’ jokes Steo but it also saw him lose friends and family members to prison and drugs. Steo left Dublin for Co. Clare in 2012 and started working as a fish smoker in Lisdoonvarna. He immersed himself in the in the vibrant local music scene of North and West Clare which is where he met his partner and the mother of his two children, Fair City actor Jacinta Sheerin, a fellow Dubliner born and bred. Jacinta sings backing vocals on a number of tracks from the album. The pair also sing as a duo in the local pubs and clubs where Jacinta always encouraged Steo to sing his own songs. It was these songs which caught the interest of Damien Dempsey and Luka Bloom. Luka agreed to teach Steo the art of recording in a studio and produced on ‘Where I’m From’; which was recorded by Martin O Malley in Malbay Studios in Miltown Malbay in West Clare.

‘Where I’m From’ is a love letter to the people and places who raised him from a boy, into a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. With heartfelt lyrics, beautiful musicianship and melodies that you’ll find yourself singing for days ‘Where I’m From’ is the epitome of Dublin Soul.

MOLLY STERLING

MOLLY STERLING

The BarN - 11:00pm

Molly Sterling is a young Dublin-based singer-songwriter, whose music takes on a dark and deep direction, reflecting an artist maturing and a songwriting style which gives a clearer sense of who Sterling is. She possesses a sonorous vocal influenced by and reminiscent of the likes of Lana Del Ray and London Grammar’s Hannah Reid. Along with her new band that now includes a rhythmic section of cello, drums and guitar, Sterling’s latest single 'Plain Static' is just the first hint of what this artist can do.
With appearances at Hard Working Class Heroes festival 2017, Culture Night Belfast, Canalphonic under her belt, this single is well and truly the announcement of her arrival on the Irish music scene proper and will affirm her as an artist worth keeping a very close eye on.
Molly's music is rare, raw and overflowing with exposed emotion that delivers every note and syllable with precise detail, giving the listener the feeling that it has been honed from somewhere deep and unfathomable.

SYRENS

SYRENS

Sol y Sombra - 11.15pm

Syrens are a songwriting duo, named after the killer mermaids from Greek mythology.

Their music fuses many genres such as pop, folk and jazz. Ella grew up with a classical music background, starting violin at a young age. She fell in love with other genres such as R&B and Jazz through the years but continued classical training. Bríd's inpiration hails from the classic folk artists of the 60s like Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel. Their influence on her narrative lyrics and striking imagery is hugely apparent. The instrumentation involves Ella on violin and keyboard and Bríd on guitar. However, their vocal harmonies are the main feature of most songs.

Ella Berke and Bríd Lyons met in BIMM, a music college where they both study songwriting.

Syrens released their debut single, 'Hit And Run', last January. This will be followed on July 12th by their next single 'Room For Two'. A launch will be held in Whelans, Dublin, on the 16th of July to mark the occasion. All future releases will be available on all digital streaming platforms.

WASTEFELLOW

Kingston’s Beer Garden - 10.30pm

Wastefellow is a forward thinking young producer and vocalist from Dublin, Ireland. Having first caught the ear of Irish blogs for his hip-hop beats, Wastefellow surprised listeners in 2016 with his debut EP ‘Amazed, A Maze!’. Seemingly emerging from nowhere, his voice and production coalesced into a singular, psychedelic sound that caught the attention of Irish taste-makers. Since then he has built a following throughout the country with his live A/V show, featuring prominently across festival line-ups and being consistently tipped to support a range of international acts. 2017 saw Wastefellow showing off his club alter-ego, Wastee. His ‘Cola’ EP was playlisted by apple music and received high praise from major international sites, with a single premiere on THUMP and a feature in Mixmag‘s essential listening section. ‘Post Human Potential’ is the new EP from Wastefellow, coming September 14th on Dublin’s Soft Boy Records. With this release Wastefellow condenses everything which has defined his sound so far down to five concise, angular tracks that float somewhere between the bedroom and the dance-floor.
