K-FEST is thrilled to announce the publishing of our micro-site dedicated to the “Coming Out Stories” installation at the 2023 festival. The site includes audio of the stories from those who took part in this project and also a release of a short video documentary highlighting the LGBTQ+ installation, commissioned by K-FEST and supported by the Bank of Ireland Begin Together Arts Fund and Creative Ireland, this project aimed to foster empathy and create a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences within the wider community.
“Coming Out Stories” utilised audio and visual art elements to bring the personal narratives of individuals coming out to life. The installation struck a chord with festival attendees, who were moved by the stories and the courage displayed by the storytellers. This unique project not only celebrated the diverse experiences of the LGBTQ+ community but also aimed to ignite conversations, dismantle prejudices, and foster a more inclusive society.
The response from festival-goers was overwhelming, with nearly 200 messages of love, acceptance, and support for the LGBTQ+ community left on post-it notes in the audience participation room. These heartfelt messages are a testament to the power of art to connect people and inspire positive change.
Speaking about the importance of the installation and its impact on the wider community, the Chairperson of K-FEST Tim Clifford shared, “At K-FEST, we strive to create a safe and inclusive space where everyone’s voice can be heard. ‘Coming Out Stories’ was a heartfelt attempt to shed light on the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community and bridge the gaps in understanding. We are immensely proud of the overwhelming support shown by our festival attendees and also hope it has made a difference to those in the LGBTQ+ community who may of felt disfranchised.”
