Next in our series ‘Meet the Artist’ is Ellen Rose Wallace, a multimedia artist and a recent graduate of LSAD.
Upon graduating, she was awarded the Ormond Studios Graduate Residency, which culminated in her first solo show in October 2021, and an accompanying artist talk.
She has recently received the top prize for her work at ‘you breathe differently down here’ at Draíocht Gallery. She was also shortlisted for the RDS Visual Art Awards 2021 and was a runner up for the Screaming Pope Prize 2021.
Developing from an early interest in oral tradition, her practice is concerned with how we conceptualise time, history and narrative. In particular, the concept of ‘time-image cinema’ developed by Gilles Deleuze is central to her practice. This describes a shift in cinema after the chaos of World War Two, when new perceptions of time and reality were presented in film. These narratives no longer followed a chain of causality, and didn’t dictate a fixed interpretation, perspective or present.
